Summary

This booklet is about the pervasiveness of child trafficking in Togo: the extent, causes, forms and consequences of the phenomenon; the urgent need for further action at various levels; and the work being undertaken by Plan Togo, along with many other organisations, to tackle the problem. The research involved a study of existing documentation; consultations with relevant government bodies and non-government organisations (NGOs), the police, customs officers and others; and field research in all five regions of the country, in villages and towns identified as severely affected by child trafficking. Interviews (involving the use of questionnaires) were conducted with parents in 650 households. Almost two-thirds of the families interviewed had been directly affected: that is, one or more children in the household had been trafficked.
