Summary

This document is the second Situation Analysis of Zambia’s orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). The Situation Analysis consists of five separate case studies: Literature Review – which analyses and summarises key publications on orphans and vulnerable children of the last five years from Zambia and the region, and elsewhere. Data Review – presents the latest available official figures on the socio-economic situation of orphans and vulnerable children, based on reanalysis of the ZDHS data. Institutional Response Assessment – is an assessment and analysis of the activites of all registered organiations that work with orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia. Extended Family Response – uses qualitative methods to examine the situation. It looks at changes in how urban and rural communities and families are responding to the orphan crisis, and coping with the day-to-day problems it presents. Models of Care – presents case studies of good practice in a variety of activities and organisations working with orphans and vulnerable children.
