Summary

War Child mapped existing community-based protection initiatives, structures and approaches to learn about the most effective family and community-based mechanisms for ensuring that children and young people are protected. The study intended to identify effective and sustainable community-based mechanisms and offer recommendations to War Child in order to help support the development of its community-based child protection strategy in Uganda and in the DRC. This study shows how the challenges in effective child protection are especially great in a context of state breakdown, where years of conflict or neglect have weakened or destroyed previously-existing protective mechanisms at the community level.
